Making active choices
The most important thing is that you're making an active choice about your provider, your fund, and your contribution level. If you haven't made those choices yourself, it's worth doing so, so you're taking control of your own retirement rather than leaving it to default settings.
Performance
Historical performance is not a guarantee of future performance. That said, it's important to be with a provider that has a good track record. Constantly switching to whatever's top of the charts tends to underperform the market over the long term, so it's better to pick a provider with a solid track record and stick with them.
Fees
All of the long-term data suggests that keeping fees low matters for good outcomes. If you're with an active fund manager charging a higher fee, it's genuinely hard for that manager to outperform the market by enough to make up for it over time.
